Community Life

Sonora Cohousing supports an environment of familiarity, which lends itself to a special kind of safety and security. Community members help each other deal with losses and illness and are there to rejoice with each others' milestone celebrations.

Common Meals:

A common meal may be one of the few opportunities in our busy week to sit down and have a real conversation with our neighbors. Many feel that these meals are the glue that holds cohousing communities together. Common meals are prepared by a team of 2-4 persons for however many diners sign up for the meal in advance.

Neighbors Supporting Each Other:

One of the most important reasons many people moved to Sonora Cohousing is the many forms of personal support neighbors extend to each other. Such support builds connections and is afforded due to everyone knowing each other and living close to each other. Below is a sampling of support often provided.

  • Childcare
  • Providing rides
  • Meals for new parents
  • Helping with a special skill
  • Teaching swimming lessons
  • House care, pet care, and plant care while away
  • Help with home maintenance

Special Events:

Holidays are special times and although the community was built in 2000, there are many traditions cropping up. Enjoy a old fashion 4th of July party with cherry pit spitting contest, 3 legged races and water balloon catching. End with a famous pie judging contest judged by Sonora's teens. Trick or treating is safe and robust at Sonora followed by a shadow puppet play and haunted house held in the Northwest Placita.
